There are four basic categories of Victoria jobs. We’ll go through each of them and some basic fundamentals surrounding each job category.

First, you have your government and civic work. The provincial government is gearing up hiring again after posting deficits the last two years. Jobs are again slowly opening up to the general public. These union jobs are in the premium category and normally offer very good security and benefits.

Second, you have hospitality and tourism jobs. Victoria lives or dies by its tourism dollars and relies on a robust workforce to entertain and feed visitors. These jobs range from hotels to restaurants to specialty entertainment offering such as whale watching or bungy jumping.

The third important job sector in Victoria is the trades. If you’re interested in construction, engineering, electrician or carpenter type work, there is plenty of it in a growing city. These jobs require simple relationships to get, mainly contacting companies and telling them you’re willing to work. They will probably start you off doing grunt work – unless you already have a trades background – and are happy to teach on the job.

Lastly, the third biggest employment area in Victoria is the private technology/media based companies. There are ton of exciting, young and growing technology based companies that deal with affiliate marketing, environmental products and public relations. If you have an environmental, technical, communications or marketing background, take a look at all the job postings out there. Some favorites to work for are NeverBlue Media, RevenueWire, Carmanah Technologies, Paretologic Inc, AbeBooks, Custom House and so many more. There seems to always be postings looking for recent university graduates and business students or those with coursework in business will do very well.
